Anant Chaturdashi 2022: Date, Significance and Mahurat

Anant Chaturdashi is one of the most significant days in the Hindu calendar because it is connected to two gods, Lord Vishnu and Lord Ganesha, and falls on the fourteenth day of the waxing phase of the lunar cycle (Shukla Paksha) in the Hindu month of Bhadrapada. Anant Chaturdashi is mainly celebrated in honour of God Vishnu.

Anant Chaturdashi falls on Friday, September 9th, this year. It is a special festival observed by both Hindus and Jains. A very strong vibration is thought to be present on this day.

Interesting fact: the Sanskrit word “Ananta” signifies endless or eternal. As a result, this Chaturdashi Tithi is considered to be extremely fortunate. To eliminate karmic reactions, sorrow, and suffering, devotees frequently observe Anant Vrat. On this day, devotees worship Lord Vishnu, and those who participate in the ten-day Vinayaka Chaturthi puja bid adieu to Lord Ganesha by submerging his statue in water.

Anant Chaturdashi, also known as Anant Chaudas, occurs on the fourteenth day of Shukla Paksha (the waxing moon phase) of the Bhadrapada month.

Anant Chaturdashi Vrat Katha The Story Behind the Festival:

Sushila and Kayndinya are the subject of the narrative.  Sushila and her husband left her father’s house after being harassed by her stepmother. They saw worshippers of Lord Anant while travelling. In addition to offering ghare and anarsa and tying silk threads around their waists, worshippers prayed for wealth and well-being. Sushila adhered to the tradition explaining Kaundya the importance of the thread’s tied on her arm. Unpersuaded, Kaundya reminded her that intelligence and not rituals were the only way for this to occur and dumped the object in the trash. Within a few days their whole wealth began to disappear realizing his error, Kaundya hanged himself out of despair. A Brahmin found him and took him to the cave. As they moved along, he witnessed a crowd of people being assembled, it was Lord Vishnu in the form of Ananta. Realising that it was Lord Vishnu himself appearing as a Brahmin, and he confessed by tumbling at Lord Vishnu’s feet. Lord Vishnu encouraged him to make a 14-year pledge in order to stop his bad behavior. This tale demonstrates the significance of submitting to Lord Vishnu.

So, with great devotion, followers of Lord Vishnu do Anant Puja by applying 14 lengthy tilaks with conventional kumkum powder. A bowl brimming with jaggery, curd, honey, and ghee as sacrifices, kept on a piece of wood as a representation of the heavenly ocean of milk, Kshirasagara. A cucumber is decorated with a sacred red thread strung in 14 knots to represent Lord Anant. It is whirled five times by submerging in Panchamrit. A representation of negativity protection. For 14 years, people observe fast, known as Pancham Vrat.

Significance of Anant Chaturdashi:

Anant Chaturdashi reminds us, the varying moods of happiness and grief in life should not upset us. This is one of the fundamental principles the scriptures advise for living in harmony and peace. The tradition is symbolized by Lord Vishnu singing serenely while lying on the bed of a snake (Sheshnaga). Today is the day to begin finding your balance and to begin cultivating calmness in all circumstances.

Lord Ganesha is used here to symbolize the human body consciousness, which is viewed as a temple for the omnipotent soul. On this auspicious day of Anant Chaturdashi, idols of Lord Ganesha are immersed in a variety of water bodies, including the sea, ponds, and lakes, as the body produced by any human must eventually be dissolved in the five elements.

The Jain community values Anant Chaturdashi’s spiritual significance. On the day of Anant Chaudas, the 12th Tirthankara, Lord Vasupujya, who is regarded as the head of the Jains, gained Nirvana. Anant Chaturdashi, which is the culmination of the Digambara Jains’ 10-day Paryushana celebration, falls during the month of Bhadrapada. A practise of requesting pardon for wrongs committed in this life. Either consciously or unconsciously. It is known as Kshamavani and occurs the very next day after Anant Chaturthi.
