Story Behind Masik Shivratri:
The stories surrounding Masik Shivratri are many. Numerous mythical stories are connected to the incident. According to Shiv Purana mythology it goes that, Brahma and Vishnu had a heated argument regarding their supremacy. A fiery Lingam and an endless Jyoti materialised from them all of a sudden. Since neither the beginning nor the end of the Lingam could be located, both agreed that the person who finds the end first will be recognised as the greatest God.
Lord Vishnu transformed into a boar to discover the button, while Lord Brahma flew high as a swan to observe the beginning of the flaming Lingam. Lord Brahma, however, lied and claimed to have seen the lingam at the top. Just then, Lord Shiva showed up and revealed his true nature as an infinite Jyotir Linga. As a punishment, Lord Shiva swore that no one would ever worship Lord Brahma on earth. Hence in the form of the divine Lingam known as the Shiva Lingam, Lord Shiva appeared on the day of Shivaratri.
So, on this day, Lord Shiva is worshipped by his followers in order to get his blessings and live a happy and tranquil life.
